Combined toxicity of therapeutic pharmaceuticals to duckweed, Lemna minor

چکیده

Pharmaceuticals, which are designed to be biologically active at low concentrations, found in surface waters, meaning aquatic organisms can exposed complex mixtures of pharmaceuticals. In this study, the adverse effects four pharmaceuticals, 17?-ethynylestradiol (synthetic estrogen), methotrexate (anticancer drug), diclofenac (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and fluoxetine (antidepressant), their binary mg/L concentrations were assessed using 7-day Lemna minor test, with both apical biochemical markers evaluated. The studied included chlorophyll a, b, carotenoids oxidative stress enzymes catalase, glutathione-S-transferase glutathione reductase, compared solvent controls. on dose-dependent for frond number, area, relative content activity S-transferase individual pharmaceuticals mixtures. According toxicity values, all tested considered as toxic or harmful organisms, highly toxic. most sensitive endpoints photosynthetic pigments observed concentration range. addition model unit approach gave similar mixture predictions, exhibiting synergistic effects. contrast, fluoxetine, mostly showed additive While expected water, chronic ecotoxicological data invertebrates fish lacking, but is required better assess environmental risk methotrexate.

Effect of copper on the toxicity and genotoxicity of cadmium in duckweed (lemna minor L.).

We investigated interactions between copper (in the concentrations of 2.5 μmol L-1 and 5 μmol L-1) and cadmium (5 μmol L-1) in common duckweed (Lemna minor L.) by exposing it to either metal or to their combinations for four or seven days. Their uptake increased with time, but it was lower in plants treated with combinations of metals than in plants treated with either metal given alone. In sep...

Adjuvants Affect Duckweed (Lemna minor) Control with Pelargonic Acid

Duckweeds (Lemna spp.) are small, free floating aquatic plants that flourish on stagnant or slow moving water surfaces throughout the world. Members of the genus are among the smallest flowering plants, providing food for fish and fowl, but their aggressive growth and invasive tendencies make them formidable aquatic weeds, which when uncontrolled can result in oxygen depletion, fish kills, and ...

Antioxidative responses of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) to short-term copper exposure.

GOAL, SCOPE AND BACKGROUND Elevated concentrations of copper in the environment result in accumulation of the metal in plants and cause an increase in reactive oxidative species (ROS). The first response to elevated amounts of ROS is increased levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to evaluate the early stages of antioxidative r...

Growth Response of the Duckweed Lemna Minor to Heavy Metal Pollution

To assess the tolerance and effect of heavy metals pollution on the duckweed Lemna minor, the aquatic plants were exposed to different concentrations of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) in a quarter Coïc and Lessaint solution at pH = 6.1 (± 0.1) and under a daily regime of 16 h light (101 μmol/m2.s1). Copper at 0.2 mg/L and nickel at 0.5 mg/L promoted the growth of Lemna fro...

Evaluation of environmental bacterial communities as a factor affecting the growth of duckweed Lemna minor

BACKGROUND Duckweed (family Lemnaceae) has recently been recognized as an ideal biomass feedstock for biofuel production due to its rapid growth and high starch content, which inspired interest in improving their productivity. Since microbes that co-exist with plants are known to have significant effects on their growth according to the previous studies for terrestrial plants, this study has at...
